Honey LocustĀ

We have assembled a collection of the best known large podded, high nutritional value thornless honeylocust varieties to be found in this country. Honeylocust pods are rich in carbohydrates and protein and are very popular in agroforestry projects around the country. Often planted in pastures the trees give light shade allowing the forage to grow well underneath, while at the same time producing large quantities of pods that can be either harvested or stored, or let to gradually fall to the ground where livestock will eat them. Also ground into a meal and used as a food source by native Americans similarly to mesquite. Its sweet pods make it a hardy equivalent to carob for northern growers. Hardy zones 3-9.
