Passiflora incarnata is commonly known as Maypop, Purple Passionflower and wild apricot. Native to the Southeast north into Illinois, Ohio and Indiana. A vigorous growing vine it bears abundant purple flowers that are followed by yellow, oval passionfruit called maypop. The fruits are wildly used and are a traditional food and medicine for the Cherokee . Hardy zones 7-11, it usually freezes down to the ground in winter. It will come bursting up with strong shoots in the spring, hence its name, Maypop!
