A cross of American and Chinese chestnut (Castanea dentata X mollissima), Luvall's Monster combines the cold hardiness of American Chestnut with the large nut size of the Chinese. Said to be the hardiest of the hybrid varieties, surviving temperatures down to -30 degrees. Very productive of tasty large nuts. Pollen sterile and needs a pollinator. Hardy zones 4-8.
