Summer is waning and the extreme heat is going down, perfect time for the fall shipping and planting season to begin!
Next weekend the 14th of September we will be putting on our new inventory of rooted cutting plugs on our website. We will have many new varieties as well as our old favorites in stock for immediate shipping. Put your orders in soon as many of our popular varieties tend to sell out quickly!
As many of our seasoned gardening customers know, fall is an excellent time to plant trees and other perennial plants in the garden. Whether you’re putting them straight into the garden or potting them up in containers, by planting now your starts have all winter to establish their roots and get established before the demands on the next growing season begin. Even if the leaves have fallen and the plant is resting through the winter, the roots will continue to grow giving them a jump start in the spring. Be sure to plant in a high quality potting or garden soil and only fertilize lightly until next spring.
While fall is overall a great time to start new plants, there are some challenges to look out for. If your climate can have hard freezes this time of year be sure to protect your new starts by either planting in a pot and keeping them in a greenhouse or other sheltered location, or if outside protect them with an appropriate plant cover of your choice until they have hardened off to their new climate. Remember fall comes late to our area, so most of the starts we send this time of year are still used to mild weather and haven’t hardened off yet. Some are even coming out of a protected greenhouse, so be sure to let them get accustomed to your temperatures and the stronger light of the outdoors gradually by protecting them in a semi shady area at first.
Happy planting!
