Pepino Dulce (Solanum muricatum) is a perennial tomato family shrub native to the Andean regions of South America. Also known as Pear melon its flavor is a cross of honeydew melon and cucumber. Widely cultivated in Chile, Columbia, Peru, Ecuador, New Zealand and parts of Europe. Hardy down to 28F, though it may lose its leaves with frost. Usually commercially grown as an annual as it produces quickly in 6 to 8 months. Roots easily and is most often started from cuttings of established plants. Can be grown in containers and does well in a greenhouse in colder climates.
