Daylilies are one of the classic edible ornamental, beautiful and easy to grow. Very productive of food and flower, all parts of the plant can be eaten.. Known as the Tawny daylily it has beautiful flowers that are striped with salmon, gold and orange hues. The tubers, leaves, flowers and flower pods of this plant are all edible and cooked in many ways. The flower buds sauteed in butter are very gourmet and the tubers when young and white are like raw jicama. When yellow and mature they taste like fingerling potatoes only sweeter. Native to Eurasia the flower buds are highly esteemed and sold in markets in China. A great perennial flower for naturalizing, they are very easy to grow in sun or part shade. They can be invasive, but with regular dinner time harvesting are easily controlled. Hardy down to at least zone 4.
