These are seedlings of the famed Indian Free peach, which is an improved variety of the old Indian peach traditionally grown in the Southwest US. Also know as Blood peaches due to their red streaked flesh, they were widely grown by the native populations of the area, with scattered reports of them growing as far north as Mendocino County, CA and as far east as North Carolina at the time when the white settlers arrived. It is speculated that they were originally brought to the Americas by the Spanish where the natives quickly saw their value and spread them around creating many orchards of them, some said to be quite large. Indian free is a larger and sweeter version of the original, which had quite a bit of genetic diversity being propagated by seed. A very hardy and tough growing tree they have good peach curl resistance and are very flavorful. They are very unique and showy with their red streaked flesh. Good for canning, drying and eating fresh.
