Also known as Saint Johns Bread, Carob is a beautiful and tough long lived leguminous evergreen tree. Produces large 1+ foot long thick nutritious pods that are ground into carob powder that is used for baking and other uses similar to chocolate. Trees are easy to grow and are hardy down to zone 8, about 18 degrees. Trees are either male flowered or female, so plant at least 3 to ensure fruit production. Can be grafted to known sexed varieties when scionwood is available. Native to much of the Mediterranean region, including Southern Europe and Northern Africa. Seeds are easy to start after given a hot water treatment and overnight soaking.
